TMS Q & A

 What is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy is a non-medication, non-invasive FDA approved treatment for depression. TMS therapy uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain that control the mood, and other psychiatric and neurologic symptoms.

TMS does not require anesthesia and is well tolerated as compared to the side effects often seen with medications and ECT. The most common side effect is a headache during or after treatment.

TMS also has efficacy in treating other conditions:

  • Anxiety
  • OCD
  • Bipolar
  • PTSD
  • Autism
  • Pain
  • Addiction
  • Suicidality
  • Tinnitus
  • ADHD
  • Tourette’s
  • Fibromyalgia

What is treatment-resistant depression?

Treatment-resistant depression doesn't respond to antidepressant medicines or other traditional therapies. You may find that your symptoms don't resolve with medication or that the side-effects of your medication are intolerable.

Antidepressant medications can take four to eight weeks to become effective, which can feel like a frustratingly long time to wait for relief. Your psychiatrist will attempt to adjust your dose or try a different type of antidepressant as you will respond differently to certain medicines than other patients.

Am I a good candidate for TMS?

TMS therapy is a safe and drug-free therapy option if your symptoms haven't improved with traditional treatment. Dr. Cabisudo may recommend TMS if your depression is interfering with your life, and you've tried several different types of medication and therapy without success. If you're interested in TMS, schedule an appointment to find out if you meet the criteria for this innovative treatment.

What should I expect during TMS treatment?

During your TMS treatment, you sit in a comfortable chair. Your provider takes several measurements to position the magnet arm near to your head. The treatment isn't painful, so you stay awake throughout the therapy and won't need any anesthesia.

Once the arm is in place, you sit still for around 37 minutes while the pulse stimulates your brain. After your treatment, you can go right back to your regular activities. Most patients have five sessions a week for up to six weeks for optimal results, although Dr. Cabisudo provides a customized treatment plan to meet your individual needs.

Call Vitality Psychiatry Group Practice or schedule a consultation online today to learn more about TMS therapy and if it's right for you.

Standard treatment consists of 30 sessions over 4 to 6 weeks. Patients are able to perform their daily activities including driving after each session. Patients may eventually be taken off their medications after completion of treatment.
